The Mas’udi Canon: Astronomy for Faith and Truth

Al-Biruni’s <em>al-Qanun al-Mas’udi</em> - the summa of Islamic mathematical astronomy: refined planetary theory and trigonometry, the coordinates of cities, the geodesy of the earth, and the elegant solution of the qibla problem, where the direction of prayer becomes a question in spherical trigonometry.

Late in his life, al-Biruni produced the crowning work of his astronomy: al-Qanun al-Mas’udi, the ‘Mas’udi Canon,’ dedicated to Sultan Mas’ud of Ghazna. It is an encyclopaedia of mathematical astronomy that gathers, orders, and corrects the whole science as it had come down through the Greeks and the Indians and been advanced in the Islamic world. Within its books are trigonometry developed as a discipline in its own right, spherical astronomy, the theory of the sun, moon, and planets, the geography and geodesy of the earth, tables of the coordinates of cities, and the mathematics of timekeeping and direction. It is often ranked as the single most important astronomical work of its era and the summa of al-Biruni’s life as a scientist. If the mountain measurement was one jewel, the Canon is the crown that holds a lifetime of them - the place where his trigonometry, his geodesy, his observations, and his critical revision of the ancients are welded into one great system.

Al-Biruni’s astronomy was built squarely on Ptolemy’s Almagest, the Greek summa that had dominated the science for eight centuries. He knew it intimately, honoured it, and used its framework - and precisely because he took it so seriously, he corrected it. Across the Canon he compares Ptolemy’s values against fresh observation and finds many in need of adjustment: the coordinates of cities, the obliquity of the ecliptic (the tilt of the earth’s axis, which he redetermined), the constant of precession, the parameters of the sun and moon. He also drew on the Indian astronomical tradition he had mastered in the India, weighing Greek against Indian methods and results. The Canon is therefore not a mere summary but a critical synthesis - the accumulated astronomy of two great civilizations, sifted through al-Biruni’s own measurements and judgment. This is the same ethic as everywhere in his work: revere your predecessors enough to test them, and improve the science by holding its inherited numbers against the sky.

The Canon is as much a work of geography and geodesy as of astronomy, and here al-Biruni’s many talents converge. To solve the qibla for every city, you must first know where every city is - its latitude and longitude - so the Canon compiles extensive tables of coordinates, determined and corrected by al-Biruni’s methods: latitude from the stars, longitude from the timing of eclipses and from measured distances. He brings to bear the same command of the earth’s size that produced the mountain measurement, the same critical comparison with Ptolemy that runs through his astronomy, and the same trigonometry that solves the qibla. He even reasons about the large-scale features of the globe, arguing from the evidence of sediments and sea-shells found far inland that land and sea have changed places over vast stretches of time - a striking anticipation of geological thinking. The Canon thus fuses the sky and the earth into one measured system: a mathematical description of the world precise enough to serve both the astronomer computing a planet and the believer turning toward Mecca.
