Why the Islamic world crowned al-Farabi <em>al-Mu’allim al-Thani</em>, ‘the Second Teacher,’ after Aristotle the First: he recovered, ordered, and transmitted the whole Greek philosophical inheritance into Arabic, and in the <em>Enumeration of the Sciences</em> drew a single map of all knowledge, from language and logic up to metaphysics and politics.
In the tenth century, in the bookshops and study-circles of Baghdad, a Muslim philosopher of Central Asian origin quietly became the most important interpreter of Greek thought the Islamic world had yet produced. Abu Nasr al-Farabi (born around 870 near Farab, in what is now Kazakhstan; died in Damascus in 950) mastered the immense body of Greek philosophy that Abbasid translators had been rendering into Arabic, often by way of Syriac, for a hundred years. Aristotle was already honoured as al-Mu’allim al-Awwal, ‘the First Teacher’ - the mind that had first set out logic, physics, and metaphysics as ordered sciences. al-Farabi earned the answering title al-Mu’allim al-Thani, ‘the Second Teacher.’ He earned it not by originality alone but by an even rarer gift: he understood the whole of philosophy as a single, connected structure, and he could teach it. Where others had translated fragments, al-Farabi recovered the architecture.
al-Farabi’s most influential single work was small and strange: the Enumeration of the Sciences (Ihsa al-Ulum), a survey that lists, defines, and ranks every branch of human knowledge. It moves in order: first the science of language (grammar, vocabulary, the rules of speech); then the science of logic; then the mathematical sciences (arithmetic, geometry, optics, astronomy, music, the science of weights, and mechanics); then natural science (physics) and the divine science (metaphysics); and finally the civil science - politics, ethics - together with jurisprudence and dialectical theology. The book is a map. It tells you what each science studies, how the sciences depend on one another, and in what order a student should climb them. Nothing quite like this ordered atlas of knowledge existed in Arabic before, and it gave the culture a shared picture of how all learning fits together.
For al-Farabi, logic is the art that gives the intellect its rules - the rules that keep it from error whenever it reasons, and that direct it toward truth wherever it might go astray. This is why logic occupies its pivotal early place: it is the discipline that makes all the others safe. A geometer proves theorems, an astronomer infers the motions of the spheres, a metaphysician argues to the existence of a First Cause - and each of them is only as reliable as the reasoning that carries them. Logic is the quality-control of thought. al-Farabi treated it with extraordinary care, working through the whole of Aristotle’s logical corpus, because he believed a civilization that wanted real knowledge, and not just opinion, had to master the instrument of proof first. Get the tool right, and the sciences it serves can be trusted; get it wrong, and every ‘discovery’ downstream is suspect.
