Seeing Is Judging

Ibn al-Haytham argued that perception is not passive reception but active inference - the mind builds what we see, a thousand years before cognitive science.

Having shown how light enters the eye, Ibn al-Haytham asked a deeper question: is seeing simply receiving that light, or is there more? His answer was strikingly modern. Bare sensation - the patch of light and colour on the eye - is only the raw material. To actually perceive a world of objects, sizes and distances, the mind must add something: comparison, memory, and inference, performed so fast we never notice. We do not see light; we see meaning, and the mind supplies it.

Ibn al-Haytham faced an obvious worry: seeing feels instantaneous and effortless, nothing like working through an argument. His reply was subtle. The mind’s inferences in perception are so habitual, so endlessly practised since infancy, that they have become automatic and unconscious - completed in an instant, below awareness. You do not feel yourself concluding that the small figure across the field is a distant adult rather than a tiny one; the judgment is made for you. Perception is reasoning that has become reflex.

If the mind adds size and distance to what the eye delivers, where does it get them? Ibn al-Haytham’s answer, again strikingly modern, is that the mind reads a set of cues - regularities in the visual scene that reliably indicate distance and size, and that it has learned to interpret. Consider how much you perceive that no single point of light on the eye could possibly contain. A figure that overlaps and hides part of another must be in front of it. Parallel lines like a road’s edges converge as they recede, so their convergence signals distance. An object of known size (a person, a familiar building) that appears small must be far away - and that judgment of distance then feeds back to tell you the size of unfamiliar things beside it. As you move, nearer objects sweep across your view faster than distant ones (motion parallax). Haze and faintness suggest remoteness.

None of these cues is the distance itself; each is a sign the mind has learned to read, and from which it infers the three-dimensional layout of a world out of the flat wash of light on the eye. Ibn al-Haytham analysed many of them explicitly - the role of intervening objects, of comparison with known sizes, of the gradual diminution of things along a receding plane. This is why the Moon illusion works: the cues near the horizon (intervening terrain) tell the mind ‘far,’ and the inference machinery dutifully enlarges the Moon to match. The cues are normally reliable, which is why we trust them without noticing; the illusions are the rare cases where the cues lie and the inference, following its usual rules, goes confidently wrong. A thousand years before perceptual psychology, Ibn al-Haytham had identified its central problem: how the mind builds a world of depth and size from cues the eye merely hints at.
