In the <em>Kitab al-Asrar</em> (<em>Book of Secrets</em>), al-Razi stripped alchemy of its mysticism and turned it into a teachable craft: a plain classification of substances, a catalogue of apparatus, and step-by-step laboratory procedures anyone could follow.
Most alchemical writing before al-Razi was deliberately obscure - wrapped in secret symbols, mystical allegory, and coded names, so that its ‘secrets’ stayed hidden from the uninitiated. Al-Razi did something radically different in his Kitab al-Asrar, the Book of Secrets: he wrote a plain, practical laboratory manual. He set out what substances there are and how to group them, what equipment the laboratory needs, and how to carry out each operation, step by step, in language a student could actually follow. He wrote it for a pupil, to be used at the bench. Gone are the dragons and riddles; in their place are chemicals, apparatus, and procedures. By treating the work of the laboratory as a body of clear, repeatable technique rather than a mystery to be guarded, al-Razi began to turn alchemy into something recognizably like chemistry.
The foundation of the Book of Secrets is a classification - al-Razi’s attempt to sort the substances a chemist handles into a rational order, the earliest such attempt of which we know. He divided them first into the great kingdoms: mineral, vegetable, and animal (with a further class of derived substances). The minerals, which mattered most to his work, he subdivided into six groups: the spirits, the volatile substances that fly off in fire (such as mercury, sal ammoniac, and the arsenics); the bodies, meaning the metals; then the stones; the vitriols; the boraxes; and the salts. This may look modest, but it is a genuine intellectual advance: to work with matter productively, you must first have an orderly scheme of what kinds of matter there are. Al-Razi gave the laboratory a map of its materials.
Al-Razi described the physical laboratory in loving, practical detail - a great many instruments, among them furnaces, alembics for distillation, flasks, beakers, crucibles, funnels, mortars and pestles, and apparatus for heating, filtering, and measuring. And he described the core operations that this equipment served: distillation, sublimation, calcination, solution, evaporation, crystallization, filtration - the fundamental techniques for purifying and transforming substances that are still the basic moves of chemistry today. He explained how to prepare and handle materials like sal ammoniac, and organized his procedures by the process involved and the substance worked on, arranged in the order a worker would actually need them. What emerges is a portrait of a real, working laboratory, and a manual for operating it - the bench made legible.
