Anaxagoras declared the sun a vast incandescent rock, the moon an earth lit by reflected light, and the heavens made of the same stuff as the ground. For naturalising the gods of the sky, he was tried for impiety in Athens - the first martyr of free inquiry.
For the Greeks, the sun was Helios, a god who drove his blazing chariot across the sky; the moon was the goddess Selene; the heavenly bodies were divine, eternal, of a higher nature than earthly things. Anaxagoras shattered this picture with a single audacious claim: the sun is not a god at all, but a stone - an enormous mass of red-hot rock, glowing because it is heated to incandescence by the speed of its motion. It is, he said, larger than the entire Peloponnese. The moon, likewise, is an earthy body, with plains and mountains and ravines, which gives no light of its own but shines by reflecting the light of the sun. The stars are fiery stones, set ablaze by the cosmic rotation. The whole glittering, sacred dome of heaven is made, Anaxagoras insisted, of the same ordinary matter as the ground beneath our feet.
This was one of the most daring intellectual acts of the ancient world. Anaxagoras took the most awe-inspiring, most obviously ‘divine’ objects in human experience - the sun, the moon, the stars - and declared them to be mere matter, subject to the same natural explanation as stones and rivers. He continued the Milesian project of naturalism and pushed it into the heavens, the last refuge of the gods. If even the sun is just a glowing rock, then there is no region of the cosmos exempt from natural explanation, no sacred precinct where the gods rule untouchable. The universe is, top to bottom, a single natural order. It is hard, now, to feel how shocking and dangerous this was - but it was shocking enough to put him on trial for his life.
Anaxagoras’ claim that the heavens are made of stone received a spectacular apparent confirmation in his own lifetime. Around 467 BC, a large meteorite fell at Aegospotami, in the Greek world - a huge stone, blazing, that plunged from the sky to the earth. The ancient sources report that Anaxagoras was credited with having predicted it, or at least that the event was taken as dramatic evidence for his theory: here was a literal piece of the heavens, a glowing stone, fallen to earth - exactly what his cosmology said the heavenly bodies were. If stones can fall from the sky, then the sky contains stones; the heavenly bodies are not divine fire but rock, of the same nature as the meteorite now cooling on the ground.
Whether or not Anaxagoras truly predicted the fall (more likely he used it to argue his case), the episode is historically resonant. It is a vivid early instance of a natural event being read as evidence for a scientific theory against a religious one - the meteorite as a witness for naturalism. For most observers, a stone falling flaming from heaven would have been a portent, an omen, a sign from the gods. Anaxagoras read it as data: confirmation that the heavens are material. This is the naturalistic mind at work, turning even the most awe-inspiring and ominous events into evidence about the natural constitution of things. The meteorite of Aegospotami became, in the tradition, a symbol of the new way of seeing - the moment a sign from the gods was reinterpreted as a sample of the sky’s true, stony nature.
Anaxagoras’ trial for impiety matters as the first clearly recorded collision between free scientific inquiry and the authority of established religion - a conflict that would recur, through Socrates, through Galileo, into our own day. The structure of the conflict is already fully present in his case. On one side: the conviction that the cosmos is to be explained by natural causes, wherever the inquiry leads, even into the heavens, even to the conclusion that the sun and moon are ordinary matter rather than gods. On the other side: a community whose order, identity, and safety are bound up with the divinity of those very heavens, and which therefore experiences naturalistic explanation as a threat - an impiety that endangers everyone.
It is essential to see that Anaxagoras was not an atheist crusading against religion. He posited Nous, a cosmic Mind, as the supreme principle; his quarrel was not with the divine as such but with the location of the divine in particular natural objects like the sun. Yet this distinction, clear to a philosopher, was lost on a city that worshipped Helios and Selene. And this too is part of the permanent pattern: the scientific naturalist may feel he is only purifying our understanding of nature, even leaving room for a higher divinity, while the religious community experiences the de-deifying of its sacred objects as an attack on the gods themselves. Anaxagoras’ exile is the first chapter in the long, unfinished story of how a society absorbs the shock of naturalism - how it learns (or refuses) to let the sun be a stone without feeling that the heavens have been emptied of meaning. That he was driven out for saying what every schoolchild now knows - that the sun is a glowing ball of matter and the moon shines by reflected light - is a measure both of his courage and of how hard-won the freedom to follow the evidence has been.
