Bacon became the prophet of experimental science and “knowledge is power,” but his vision of pure induction and mastery over nature drew deep and lasting objections.
Francis Bacon never made a great discovery. He performed few experiments, missed the breakthroughs of his own age, and reportedly died of a chill caught while stuffing a chicken with snow to test refrigeration. And yet within decades of his death in 1626 he had become the patron saint of a new way of knowing.
His power lay not in findings but in a programme. Bacon argued that knowledge should be built up patiently from observation and experiment, gathered cooperatively, and aimed at practical benefit rather than idle contemplation. When the Royal Society of London was founded in 1660, its members openly hailed him as their inspiration. A century later the French Encyclopedists put him at the head of their family tree of human learning.
This lesson traces that influence, and then turns to a harder question: was Bacon’s method actually sound, and was its goal actually wise?
Before Bacon, the highest knowledge was often thought to be contemplative: to understand the cosmos was to share, faintly, in the mind of God. Bacon redirected the whole enterprise toward action. The point of knowing causes, he insisted, was to be able to produce effects, to command nature by obeying her.
His most famous aphorism fuses the two. In the Novum Organum (1620) he writes that human knowing and human doing are, at bottom, one and the same act. To grasp a cause is already to hold a lever on the world. The popular slogan ‘knowledge is power’ is a later compression of this thought, but the idea is genuinely his.
Earlier, in The Advancement of Learning (1605), he had named the proper end of all this striving: knowledge should be a resource for the good of humankind.
Bacon’s emphasis on experience as the source of knowledge became the seedbed of British empiricism. Locke, Berkeley and Hume would all build on the conviction that the mind begins with what the senses deliver, not with innate truths. The same instinct fed the Enlightenment’s confidence that patient, public inquiry could replace inherited dogma.
Diderot and d’Alembert’s great Encyclopédie (begun 1751) cast Bacon as a founding hero and organized human knowledge along lines he had sketched. The dream of science as a collective, progressive, world-improving enterprise, the dream that still shapes universities and research institutes, is recognizably Baconian.
