Bruno’s boldest stroke: he shattered the outermost sphere of the closed medieval cosmos and declared space infinite, sprinkled with innumerable suns and worlds, a universe with no wall, no edge, and no centre at all.
For nearly two thousand years, educated Europe lived inside a closed box. The cosmos of Aristotle and Ptolemy was a set of nested crystalline spheres, the Earth motionless at the centre, and beyond the last sphere of the fixed stars, nothing - not even empty space. The universe was finite, bounded, and snug. Giordano Bruno, a runaway Dominican friar from Nola near Naples, did something no one had dared: he took a hammer to the outermost sphere and let the mind fly straight through it. There is no wall, he insisted, no final boundary, no shell of stars enclosing us. Space opens out forever. The universe is infinite, and the fixed stars are not lamps hung on a dome but distant suns, scattered through an endless void, each of them warming worlds of its own. Where his contemporaries saw a comforting enclosure, Bruno saw a prison, and he broke it open.
Once the wall was gone, the fixed stars changed their nature. In the old picture they were points of light embedded in the eighth sphere, all the same distance away. Bruno saw them as suns - vast, self-luminous bodies like our own, only unimaginably far off, each surrounded by planets we cannot see for the glare and the distance. And if there are innumerable suns, there are innumerable earths, turning about them just as our planets turn about ours. He went further still, and this is what most alarmed the theologians: those other worlds might well be inhabited, home to their own living beings. The cosmos was not a stage built for one drama on one Earth, but an endless fertility of worlds without number. Three centuries before telescopes could confirm that the stars are distant suns, Bruno reasoned his way to it from sheer metaphysical nerve.
The consequences are staggering, and Bruno embraced every one of them. If the centre is everywhere, no location is special, and the old hierarchy of the heavens collapses. There is no pure, changeless region ‘above’ and corrupt, changeable region ‘below’: the same matter, the same physics, the same kind of world is found throughout. The stars beyond are not made of a divine fifth element; they are suns of the same fire as ours. Our world is not the sump of the cosmos nor its throne - it is one world among endlessly many, neither better nor worse placed. Bruno turned the humiliation of losing our central seat into an exhilaration: we are citizens of an infinite universe, kin to innumerable worlds, no longer shut in a cramped little sphere. The cosmos he offered was vaster and stranger than anything his age could stomach, and it is essentially the cosmos we now inhabit.
