Where Darwin found his mechanism - in a grim economist’s arithmetic of population - and the dangerous misuse the idea invited.
Darwin had gathered mountains of evidence that species change, but no mechanism - no engine to drive the change. The spark came in October 1838 from an unlikely source: he picked up, for amusement, Thomas Malthus’s gloomy Essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus argued that populations multiply geometrically while food grows only arithmetically, so every population breeds far beyond what its world can feed - guaranteeing a perpetual struggle of too many mouths for too little bread.
‘Struggle’ conjures fangs and combat, but Darwin meant it broadly - a plant at the desert’s edge ‘struggles’ against drought; a bird struggles to feed its young. And ‘fittest’ does not mean strongest, fiercest or best. It means best fitted to a particular environment - which might reward camouflage, cooperation, a longer beak, patience, or simply having more surviving offspring. In a hard winter the fittest may be the smallest. Fitness is not a medal for excellence; it is a measure, after the fact, of who left more descendants in this place, at this time.
To see why Malthus mattered so much, you have to take his argument seriously on its own terms. Writing in 1798, Thomas Malthus - a clergyman and one of the first economists - set out to puncture the optimistic belief that human society was marching toward perfection. His weapon was arithmetic. A population, left unchecked, grows geometrically: it doubles and doubles again - 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 - multiplying like compound interest. But the food supply, even with the best improvements, can grow at best arithmetically - 1, 2, 3, 4 - by addition, not multiplication. Set those two curves side by side and the conclusion is iron: population must always tend to outrun its food, and the gap is closed only by what Malthus grimly called the ‘positive checks’ - famine, disease, and war - that kill off the surplus.
It was a bleak, deterministic vision, and Malthus drew harsh social conclusions from it (he opposed poor relief, arguing it only encouraged the poor to breed more mouths than could be fed). But strip away the politics and the pure biological core is what electrified Darwin: in every species, vastly more individuals are produced than can possibly survive, so death on a massive scale is not an accident of a harsh year but a permanent, mathematical necessity. Malthus had described the relentless overproduction and culling that, Darwin saw, must be happening in every population of every species, all the time. The economist meant his arithmetic as a counsel of despair about humanity; Darwin turned it into the creative engine of all life.
