Necessity and Chance

Democritus’ uncompromising claim that nothing happens at random but everything by <em>necessity</em> - that the whole world, gods aside, is a vast mechanism of atoms colliding, with no purpose, no design, and no providence guiding it.

Democritus drew from his atomism a conclusion as bold as the atomism itself: that everything in the world happens by necessity. There is no chance, no luck, no fate, no divine plan, no purpose anywhere in nature - only atoms moving and colliding according to the unbreakable laws of their own motion. When atoms meet, they rebound or interlock strictly according to their shapes and speeds; the outcome of every collision is fixed by what came before. Run the cosmos forward from any moment, and everything that follows is the rigorously determined result of the atoms’ prior positions and motions. Nothing could have happened otherwise.

This is one of the earliest and most uncompromising statements of determinism - the view that every event is necessitated by prior causes, so that the entire history of the universe, from the formation of worlds to the thoughts in your head, unfolds with the inevitability of a falling stone. The Greek doxographers report Democritus’ principle starkly: ‘Nothing occurs at random, but everything for a reason and by necessity.’ The word he uses, often rendered ‘necessity’ (anankê), names the iron causal order of the atomic world - the ‘whirl’ or vortex of atoms that, once set in motion, grinds out every subsequent event with no possibility of deviation. The universe, for Democritus, is a machine that needs no operator and tolerates no miracles.

The most radical and, to his contemporaries, most shocking consequence of Democritus’ determinism was the removal of the gods from the governance of nature. If everything happens by the necessary collision of atoms, then nothing happens because a god wills it, and nothing happens for the sake of any end. The order of the cosmos is not designed; it is the residue of blind mechanical sorting. The earth is not at the centre because it was placed there by providence, but because heavier atoms necessarily settle toward the centre of a whirl. Living things are not crafted for their functions by a divine maker; they are configurations of atoms that happened, by necessity, to come together and persist. Democritus did not deny that people believe in gods - he even offered a naturalistic account of how such beliefs arise, from awe at thunder and the heavens, and from ‘images’ that visit us in dreams - but he denied that any gods run the world.

This was the birth of a thoroughgoing naturalism: the program of explaining every feature of the world by natural causes alone, without appeal to divine purpose. It is hard to overstate how revolutionary this was. The entire ancient world assumed that the cosmos was shot through with divinity and purpose - that the heavens were gods, that nature aimed at ends, that providence governed events. Democritus swept all of this away and offered instead a universe that is exactly what its atoms make it, no more and no less: purposeless, undesigned, self-sufficient, indifferent. For this he was reviled by the pious for centuries; and for this he is honoured as one of the founders of the scientific worldview, which seeks the natural causes of things and leaves the gods out of its equations.

Democritus’ vision of a world governed wholly by mechanical necessity, without purpose or providence, is the prototype of the modern scientific worldview - and the source of its deepest controversies. The program he founded is the program science has pursued ever since: explain phenomena by efficient causes (this happened because that pushed it), not by final causes (this happened in order to achieve some end); seek the natural mechanism, not the divine intention; assume the universe is law-governed and self-sufficient. When Laplace, two thousand years later, imagined a vast intelligence that, knowing the position and motion of every particle, could compute the entire past and future of the universe, he was painting Democritus’ world in mathematical colours. The clockwork cosmos of classical physics is the atomic cosmos of Abdera, refined.

And the great questions Democritus’ mechanism raised are still ours. Does explaining the world by blind necessity leave any room for purpose, meaning, or value - or does it expose these as illusions we project onto an indifferent machine? Can the appearance of design in living things really be the product of undirected processes? (Darwin would eventually show how - natural selection is, in a sense, the mechanism Democritus lacked, explaining functional order without a designer.) And does a deterministic physics leave room for human freedom? Democritus did not answer all of these, and modern physics has complicated his strict determinism with quantum indeterminacy. But the framework is his: a universe to be understood by uncovering the necessary natural causes of things, in which the burden of proof falls on anyone who would smuggle purpose or providence back in. That framework, more than any single doctrine, is Democritus’ enduring bequest.
