Dewey’s analysis of what genuine thinking is: not idle mental drift but a disciplined process that begins in a felt difficulty, forms and tests hypotheses, and ends by resolving the trouble - thought as experimental conduct, the method of intelligence itself.
We use the word ‘thinking’ loosely for almost anything that goes on in our heads - a stream of daydreams, a stray memory, an unexamined opinion, a belief we happen to hold. Dewey’s How We Think (1910) begins by clearing this away. Much of what passes for thought, he observes, is mere mental drift: images and fancies floating by at random, with no aim and no accountability. Another kind is simply believing something - taking a thing to be so - which may rest on no examination at all, just habit, hearsay, or wishful acceptance. Neither of these is what Dewey means by reflective thinking. Reflective thinking is distinguished by being controlled and directed: it has an aim (to settle a genuine question), it holds its beliefs answerable to evidence, and it follows a chain of ideas where each grows out of the last and points toward a conclusion. It is the difference between letting the mind wander and putting the mind to work. And the mind goes to work, Dewey says, only when something has gone wrong - when smooth activity is interrupted by a real perplexity.
The first phase of reflection, then, is a felt difficulty - a vague sense that something is wrong, that the way ahead is blocked or unclear. But a feeling of trouble is not yet a thought. The crucial second step is to locate and define the difficulty: to convert the diffuse unease into a definite problem, a clear question to be answered. Dewey stressed that this step is half the battle and often the hardest. A problem well stated is a problem half solved; a problem badly framed sends all the later thinking astray. Much bad thinking, he noticed, comes from rushing past this phase - seizing on the first solution that pops up before we have understood what the problem really is. Reflection, properly conducted, lingers here: it examines the situation, gathers the relevant facts, and shapes the trouble into a precise question. Only when we know exactly what we are trying to figure out can the search for a solution be intelligent rather than a lucky guess.
Putting the phases together, Dewey gives us the shape of a complete act of reflective thinking. It runs, roughly, through five moments: (1) a felt difficulty; (2) its location and definition as a problem; (3) the suggestion of a possible solution, a hypothesis; (4) the reasoning-out of that suggestion’s consequences; and (5) further observation or experiment that confirms or refutes it, ending in a settled conclusion. These are not rigid steps in a fixed order - they overlap, loop back, and repeat - but together they describe how intelligence actually resolves a trouble. Notice what this makes thinking into: it is experimental. The same pattern that a scientist follows in the laboratory is, for Dewey, the pattern of all genuine thought, from a cook adjusting a failed recipe to a statesman facing a crisis. Ideas are treated as hypotheses; their worth is decided by their consequences when we act on them. Thought, in short, is a form of doing - an active, tentative, self-correcting engagement with a problematic world, not a passive mirroring of a reality already fixed.
