Commercial Mathematics: The Engine of the Medieval Economy

The <em>Liber Abaci</em> as a working manual for merchants - currency conversion, profit and interest, barter, and the all-purpose ‘rule of three’ - and how the new arithmetic became a driving force of the medieval commercial revolution, fought over by the abacists at their counting-boards and the algorists with pen and figures.

It is easy to remember Fibonacci for rabbits and forget that the Liber Abaci is, overwhelmingly, a practical business manual. The great majority of its problems are drawn straight from the working life of a Mediterranean merchant, because that is who Fibonacci wrote for and what he knew. His father was a customs official; he himself was trained for trade. So the book teaches, in relentless concrete detail, how to price goods, compute a profit, split the takings of a partnership, exchange one city’s coinage for another’s, alloy metals to a required standard, and barter one commodity for another at a fair rate. The abstract beauty of place-value numerals is, throughout, harnessed to the most down-to-earth ends. Fibonacci’s pitch to his readers was never ‘this is elegant’; it was ‘this will make you faster, surer, and less cheated in the market.’

Medieval commerce was an arithmetical nightmare that the new methods tamed. There was no common currency: a trader might deal in Pisan pounds, Byzantine hyperpyra, Egyptian dinars, and a dozen local coinages, each with its own weight and fineness, and every cross-border deal meant a conversion. Weights and measures varied from city to city. Interest and profit had to be reckoned, partnerships divided according to each partner’s stake and time invested, and goods bartered when coin was short. Fibonacci’s book works through all of it: problems on the value of money in different lands, on the profit from buying here and selling there, on how to split gains fairly, on the fair exchange of pepper for hides. Each is a small, realistic story with numbers attached. Taken together they amount to a complete arithmetical education for the merchant class of a rapidly commercializing Europe - a curriculum for the counting-house.

The rivalry between the two methods became a recognizable feature of late-medieval and Renaissance culture, even depicted in art as a contest between two figures: one calculating with counters on a board, the other writing figures on paper, sometimes with the muse of Arithmetic looking on. It was not a quick rout. The abacists had tradition, guild organization, and law on their side; recall that Florence in 1299 restricted merchants’ use of the new numerals, partly from genuine fear of fraud. For generations the two systems coexisted, and many a merchant kept his working sums in the new figures while writing his formal totals in Roman numerals. But the tide ran one way. Italy filled with scuole d’abaco, ‘abacus schools’ that, despite the name, taught written Hindu-Arabic calculation from vernacular textbooks descended from Fibonacci’s work. Generation by generation, the algorists won, and the counting-board dwindled into a schoolroom relic.
