The Liber Abaci: Bringing the Indian Numbers to Europe

How a Pisan merchant’s son who learned ‘the nine figures of the Indians’ and the sign for zero in a North African port wrote the book that taught Europe to calculate with place-value numerals, and why 0 to 9 beat Roman numerals for commerce and computation.

In 1202 a Pisan named Leonardo, later nicknamed Fibonacci, opened a book that would slowly change how Europe counted. Its first sentences introduced something most Europeans had never seen written down: a compact set of numerals for doing arithmetic on paper. ‘These are the nine figures of the Indians,’ he wrote, listing 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1, ‘and with these nine figures, and with the sign 0, which in Arabic is called zephir, any number whatsoever may be written.’ That last clause is the revolution in a sentence. With just ten marks, and crucially a mark for nothing, you could write any number and, far more important, calculate with it by simple written procedures. The book was the Liber Abaci, the ‘Book of Calculation,’ and it was Europe’s great introduction to the system we still use today.

The strangest and most powerful part of the system is the zero. It is not a quantity you can point to - it is a symbol for an absence, a placeholder that keeps the columns aligned. Fibonacci’s word for it, zephir, comes from the Arabic sifr (‘empty’), itself a translation of the Sanskrit sunya (‘void’). That single Arabic word branched into two English words: through one line of descent it became cipher, and through the Italian zefiro, contracted to zero. Medieval Europeans found the idea genuinely unsettling - a sign for nothing that nonetheless changes the meaning of everything around it. Yet without it, there is no way to distinguish 25 from 205 or 2005 on the page. The zero is the keystone; remove it, and the elegant arch of place-value notation falls down.

The Liber Abaci is not a slim pamphlet of digits; it is a vast practical encyclopedia of calculation, running to fifteen chapters. It teaches how to write the numerals, then how to add, subtract, multiply and divide with them, how to work with fractions (Fibonacci did much to popularize the fraction bar), and then applies all this to a torrent of real problems: converting between the bewildering currencies and weights of medieval commerce, computing profit and interest, dividing partnerships, alloying metals, and much else. Despite its title, the book actually argues against the physical abacus and counting-board in favour of pen-and-paper reckoning with the new figures. It was copied, taught, and imitated for centuries, seeding the ‘abacus schools’ of Italy where generations of merchants learned their sums. Through the Liber Abaci and its many descendants, the ten symbols slowly conquered a continent.
