The most famous attack on Freud came from the philosopher of science Karl Popper, and it was not that Freud’s theory is false but that it is not really testable at all. Popper had asked what separates genuine science from pseudo-science, and answered: falsifiability. A real scientific theory sticks its neck out - it forbids certain outcomes, makes risky predictions that could fail. Einstein’s theory predicted that starlight would bend by a precise amount, and would have been refuted if it had not. Psychoanalysis, Popper charged, does the opposite: it can explain any behaviour whatsoever. A man who saves a drowning child and a man who murders one can both be fitted to Freudian theory with equal ease - the one sublimating, the other yielding to the id. No conceivable observation could count against it. And a theory compatible with everything, Popper argued, tells us nothing; its endless explanatory success is not its strength but its fatal weakness.
Not everyone accepted Popper’s framing. Some critics argued that psychoanalysis does make testable claims - and that when you test them, they mostly fail. The philosopher Adolf Grünbaum, in a searching study, contended that Freud’s theory is not unfalsifiable at all: Freud himself staked it on clinical evidence and even proposed that the therapy’s success would confirm the theory. The real problem, Grünbaum argued, is that this clinical evidence is fatally contaminated by suggestion - the analyst, convinced of the theory, unwittingly leads the patient to produce the memories, associations, and ‘confirmations’ the theory predicts, so the data cannot bear the weight placed on them. Meanwhile, experimental psychologists tested specific Freudian propositions - about repression, dreams, the stages of development - and found many of them unsupported or contradicted. From this side the verdict is not ‘untestable’ but ‘tested, and largely found wanting.’ The two critiques point in different directions but arrive at the same doorstep: whatever psychoanalysis is, it has not earned the authority of a demonstrated science.
How do we sum up a thinker who is so widely held to be scientifically discredited and yet so deeply woven into how we all think? The poet W. H. Auden, mourning Freud’s death in 1939, caught it exactly: Freud had become less a person than a whole climate of opinion, an atmosphere we breathe without noticing. That is the paradox of his legacy. Judged as the founder of a science, Freud fails many of the tests; judged by his influence, he is one of the small handful of thinkers - with Marx and Darwin - who permanently changed the modern mind’s image of itself. The very words we use to talk about ourselves are his: the unconscious, repression, denial, the ego, the Freudian slip, being ‘in denial,’ the neurotic, the defensive. We are all, in our casual self-understanding, more Freudian than we know. He may have been a failed scientist and a great, dark, disturbing interpreter of the human condition - and the argument over which of those he really was is itself part of his permanence.
