The Starry Messenger

How a homemade telescope shattered two thousand years of belief in a perfect, unchanging heaven - and why the evidence still had to fight to be believed.

In 1609 Galileo heard of a Dutch toy that made distant things look near. Within months he had ground his own lenses and built a far more powerful version - then did what the spectacle-makers had not thought to do: he pointed it at the night sky. What he found he rushed into print in 1610, in a slim and electrifying book, Sidereus Nuncius, the Starry Messenger. The Milky Way, a faint smear to the naked eye, dissolved under his lens into countless separate stars. He did not invent the instrument; he turned a novelty into an organ of discovery, and in doing so extended human sight past a boundary it had never crossed.

Night after night Galileo watched four little stars strung out beside Jupiter - and saw them move, sliding from one side to the other, sometimes vanishing behind the planet. They were moons, circling Jupiter. The implication was seismic. The standard objection to a moving Earth had always been that the Moon would be left behind - yet here was a planet carrying its moons with it as it travelled. A centre of motion existed that was plainly not the Earth. He named the four the Medicean Stars, a courtier’s gift to his Medici patron that would soon win him a place at the Florentine court.

Sidereus Nuncius made Galileo famous almost overnight. It was a short book in plain, urgent Latin, and it travelled fast across a Europe hungry for wonders; within months Galileo had traded his Paduan professorship for the grander title of court philosopher and mathematician to the Medici. But fame is not assent. Some of the most learned men of the age simply refused to accept what the glass showed. A few would not even look through it, on the principle that a truth about the heavens could not be settled by a mechanical tube; others looked, saw the dots beside Jupiter, and insisted they were defects of the lens. This was not mere stupidity. The telescope was a brand-new device with no accepted theory behind it, and the heavens were, by the reigning physics, a different order of reality from the workshop bench. Galileo had seen further than anyone in history - and discovered that seeing further is only the beginning of the fight.
