Abduction and Fallibilism

Peirce’s logic of discovery and his theory of knowledge’s limits: <em>abduction</em>, the reasoning that forms explanatory hypotheses and is the only inference that introduces a new idea, paired with <em>fallibilism</em>, the doctrine that inquiry never reaches absolute certainty yet genuinely progresses by correcting itself.

Logicians before Peirce recognized two kinds of inference. Deduction draws out what is already contained in its premises: given the rule and the case, it derives the necessary result (all beans in this bag are white; these beans are from the bag; therefore these beans are white). Induction generalizes from samples: having drawn many white beans from the bag, it infers the rule that all the beans in the bag are white. But neither of these, Peirce noticed, ever gives us a genuinely new idea - deduction only unpacks, and induction only measures how often. So where do the explanatory hypotheses of science, the creative leaps, actually come from? Peirce identified a third, long-overlooked mode of inference, which he came to call abduction (or hypothesis, or retroduction). It is the reasoning that runs backward from a surprising fact to a possible explanation of it - and it is, he argued, the only kind of inference that can introduce a new idea into our thinking at all.

Abduction has a definite form, even though it feels like a flash of insight. It starts from a surprising fact, C. We notice that if some hypothesis A were true, then C would be a matter of course - C would no longer be surprising but expected. Therefore, Peirce says, there is reason to suspect that A may be true. Notice how weak and how indispensable this is. Abduction does not prove A; many different hypotheses might each explain C. It only offers A as worth considering, a candidate to be developed by deduction (what else would follow if A were true?) and then tested by induction (do those further consequences actually hold?). This is the anatomy of a scientific conjecture. Kepler staring at the orbit of Mars, a physician reading a cluster of symptoms, a detective before the clues - each performs abduction, leaping to the explanation that would make the puzzling facts fall into place. Peirce insisted this leap is not outside logic but a species of inference with its own rules, the first stage of all inquiry.

This brings Peirce to one of his signature doctrines: fallibilism. It is the view that none of our beliefs, not even in mathematics or the hardest science, is absolutely certain, exact, and beyond all possible revision. Every conclusion we reach is, in principle, open to correction by further inquiry; our knowledge never rests on an unshakable foundation but always floats in a medium of uncertainty and indeterminacy. Crucially, fallibilism is not scepticism. The sceptic says we cannot know anything; Peirce says we know a great deal, but we hold it all provisionally, as the best-tested opinion so far, always revisable. To be a fallibilist is to combine real confidence with genuine humility - to be at once committed to our best current beliefs and ready to give any of them up the moment experience turns against them. This blend of conviction and openness is, for Peirce, the very temper of the scientific mind.
