The Last Polymath of the Stoa

Posidonius of Apamea - the one man who measured the sun, mapped the tides, wrote fifty-two books of history, and taught Cicero and Pompey - held that philosophy and the sciences are not rivals but one connected inquiry: the philosopher supplies the causes, the special sciences supply the phenomena.

Posidonius of Apamea, born around 135 BC in a Greek city on the Orontes in Syria, became the most learned man of the ancient world after Aristotle. He studied in Athens under Panaetius, the leading Stoic of the age, then settled on the island of Rhodes, where he ran the most famous school of his day and served the city as magistrate and as its ambassador to Rome. Into one lifetime he packed astronomy, geography, meteorology, geology, mathematics, ethics, logic, and a monumental history in fifty-two books. What held this vast range together was a single conviction: that the sciences and philosophy are not separate pursuits but parts of one inquiry into a single, ordered world. The special sciences establish what is the case; philosophy explains why. To understand the tide or the comet or the rise of Rome, Posidonius thought, you must in the end understand the whole cosmos of which each is a part.

This distinction became one of the most influential ideas in the history of science. The astronomer, Posidonius said, is content to find some geometry that reproduces what we see in the sky - and often several rival geometries will do the job equally well. Faced with such a tie, the astronomer as astronomer has no way to choose; his mathematics only saves the appearances. To decide which model describes reality, and to explain why bodies move as they do, you must appeal to the physics of the whole - to the nature of the heavenly stuff, the tensions that bind the cosmos, the causes that run through it. Posidonius therefore refused the modern-sounding idea that science can be a self-sufficient calculating machine indifferent to causes. For him, description that never reaches explanation is unfinished knowledge. The sciences hand their hard-won facts up to philosophy, and philosophy hands back the reasons.

Posidonius put this conviction to work everywhere. He built a rotating sphere, an orrery, whose gears reproduced the daily motions of the sun, moon, and planets - a working model of the heavens that made the cosmic order visible on a tabletop. He explained the halo round the moon, the causes of earthquakes and volcanoes, the origin of springs and rivers. He classified climatic zones and argued that peoples take their character partly from their climate. He timed the Atlantic tides against the phases of the moon. And through it all he insisted that these were not scattered curiosities but readings of one connected order. His pupil Cicero, who heard him lecture on Rhodes in 78 BC and called him ‘my teacher,’ carried this vision of a rational, providential cosmos into Latin and into the Western tradition. The polymath was not a collector of facts; he was a reader of the single book of the world.
