Scientia Experimentalis: Why Reasoning Is Not Enough

Roger Bacon’s boldest idea, from Part VI of the <em>Opus Majus</em>: that argument alone can never make the mind rest in certainty, because only experience verifies a conclusion - and that a distinct science of experience should stand over all the others as their tester.

Around 1267 the Franciscan friar Roger Bacon sent Pope Clement IV an enormous plea for the reform of Christian learning, the Opus Majus (‘Greater Work’). Its climax, Part VI, unveils what Bacon called scientia experimentalis, experimental science. His starting point is a distinction that still sounds modern. There are, he says, two modes of acquiring knowledge: by reasoning and by experience. But the two are not equal. A chain of reasoning can compel you to grant its conclusion and yet leave your mind uneasy, still doubting, not truly at rest. Only experience closes the gap. Reasoning may be flawless and still fail to certify, because certainty is something the mind attains only when it meets the thing itself. This is why, for Bacon, no science is complete until its conclusions have been checked against experience - and why experience deserves a science of its own.

Bacon’s favourite illustration is fire. Imagine a person who has never encountered flame but is given an airtight proof that fire burns. Will they trust it? Bacon says no: they will not truly believe it, and certainly will not keep their hand out of the fire, until they have felt the burn for themselves. The proof was correct all along, but it did not certify; only the experience did. From this homely example Bacon draws a sweeping rule: without experience nothing can be sufficiently known. The greatest mathematicians, he notes, will not accept even a geometrical conclusion as fully certain until it is set before the eyes in a diagram. If experience is required to nail down the driest truths of mathematics, how much more is it needed for the messy truths of nature. Experience, not eloquence, is the final judge.

Because it alone can verify, Bacon crowned experimental science domina omnium scientiarum, the mistress of all the sciences. The other disciplines are its servants: they build arguments and deductions, but they must bring their conclusions to experimental science to be stamped as true. A geometer can prove a theorem, an astronomer can compute a position, a physician can reason about a remedy - yet each result remains, in Bacon’s eyes, a candidate awaiting the verdict of experience. This inverts the usual medieval ranking, which placed the abstract, demonstrative sciences highest and hands-on inquiry lowest. Bacon put the tester on top. It was a startling thing to say in the thirteenth century, three hundred years before anyone spoke of a ‘scientific method,’ and it is why later ages, rightly or not, hailed this friar as a prophet of experimental science.
