Bacon’s conviction, argued in Part IV of the <em>Opus Majus</em>, that all natural knowledge rests on mathematics - that without geometry and number the sciences and the world cannot be understood - and his physics of ‘the multiplication of species,’ in which every natural power spreads through space along geometrical lines.
In Part IV of the Opus Majus, Bacon makes a claim that must have startled a curriculum built on logic and theology: mathematics is not one science among many but the foundation of them all, the ‘gate and key’ through which every other science is entered. He argues that mathematics is the easiest and earliest knowledge, the one children grasp first and minds accept most readily, and therefore the natural starting point of all learning. But it is far more than a beginner’s subject. Because the certainty of mathematics is complete - its demonstrations command assent as no other science’s do - it is the model of what real knowledge looks like, and because its truths run through everything, no other science can be truly known without it. To neglect mathematics, Bacon warns, is to injure all knowledge at once.
Behind the slogan lies a whole physics. Bacon held that every natural agent - a fire, a magnet, a star, above all a source of light - propagates its power outward through the surrounding medium, and he called this radiated power a species (a likeness or influence). The doctrine of the ‘multiplication of species’ is his account of how causation actually travels: a species spreads from its source in straight lines, in every direction, weakening with distance, reflecting and refracting according to the shape of what it meets. Crucially, all of this happens geometrically - along lines, at angles, forming figures. If the fundamental action of nature is the geometrical spreading of powers, then geometry is not a human convenience laid over nature; it is the actual grammar in which nature operates. That is why mathematics is the key: it is the language the world is written in.
Bacon was not content to argue abstractly; he showed mathematics doing real work across the sciences. Astronomy, he pointed out, is pure applied geometry and number, and without it the Church could not even fix the date of Easter - indeed he used mathematical astronomy to prove that the Julian calendar was badly in error and must be reformed. Geography and the making of maps depend on mathematical coordinates. Music is number heard. The theory of tides, the action of the heavens on the earth, the design of instruments, even the interpretation of Scripture’s measures and chronologies - all, he argued, require mathematics. And medicine and the study of the human body, through the geometry of the powers acting on them, come within its reach too. Mathematics for Bacon is not a specialty but a universal solvent: apply it, and one science after another becomes clear, quantitative, and testable.
