Russell’s vision of analysis as method - that the world is made of atomic facts to be reached by logical dissection, that inferred entities should be replaced by logical constructions from what we directly know, and that knowledge rests on acquaintance.
Having revolutionised logic and the philosophy of language, Russell turned the same method on reality itself. His philosophy of the 1910s, which he called logical atomism, rests on a simple conviction: to understand anything complex, analyse it into its simplest constituents. Just as a sentence can be analysed into its true logical form, the world can be analysed into atomic facts - the smallest units of how things are, each consisting of some simple objects standing in some relation, such as this being red, or a being to the left of b. Everything else, all the complex facts and truths, is built up out of these atoms by logical combination. The world, on this view, is fundamentally a collection not of things but of facts, and philosophy’s task is the patient logical dissection that lays those facts bare. It was a vision Russell shared and sharpened with his student Wittgenstein, whose Tractatus would open by declaring that the world is the totality of facts, not of things.
The maxim sounds abstract, but Russell used it as a concrete method. Consider matter. We never directly perceive a physical object; we have a stream of private sense-data - this brown, this hardness, this creak - and we ordinarily infer a persisting material table behind them. But that inference could be wrong, and the table is never itself given. Russell’s proposal was to define the table as a logical construction: a certain orderly class of actual and possible sense-data, the appearances it would present from all points of view. The word ‘table’ then becomes shorthand for a structured family of sensory facts, not a name for an unknowable something-behind-the-scenes. He applied the same strategy elsewhere, most powerfully to mathematics, where he construed numbers not as mysterious abstract objects but as classes. The advantage is intellectual honesty: a construction assumes only what we already grant, whereas an inference gambles on the existence of something we can never check. ‘The supreme maxim,’ Russell wrote, makes philosophy stingier with its ontology and safer in its claims.
Underneath the method lies Russell’s theory of knowledge, built on a sharp distinction between two ways we know things. We have knowledge by acquaintance with whatever we are directly aware of, with no inference in between: our present sense-data, our own mental states, perhaps certain universals. And we have knowledge by description of everything we know only about - other people’s minds, physical objects, the past, the interior of the sun - grasped through descriptions such as ‘the cause of this sensation’ or ‘the man who wrote Waverley.’ Acquaintance is the bedrock; description is how we reach beyond it. Russell held a powerful principle linking the two: every proposition we can understand must be composed entirely of constituents with which we are acquainted. We can think about Julius Caesar, whom we never met, only because we can frame a description built from ingredients we do know. Acquaintance is thus the foundation on which all our farther-reaching knowledge, and even our capacity to entertain a thought at all, must ultimately rest.
