Shen Kuo gave the first clear description of the magnetized compass needle - and noticed something no one had recorded before: it does not point due south, but leans a little east. That single sentence is the discovery of magnetic <em>declination</em>, centuries ahead of Europe.
Somewhere in the Dream Pool Essays, between notes on other matters, Shen Kuo set down the earliest unambiguous description of the magnetic compass in any language. Magicians and geomancers, he reports, magnetize the point of a needle by rubbing it with lodestone (natural magnetic iron ore); the needle is then able to point to the south. He does not stop at the report. With the instincts of an experimenter, he describes several ways to mount such a needle so it can turn freely and settle into its direction - and he compares them, judging which works best. The Chinese had known the directional power of the lodestone for centuries, but here, for the first time, is the working compass needle set down plainly, tested, and evaluated. A technology that would one day carry ships across every ocean makes its first clear appearance in the world as a jotting in a scholar’s notebook.
The reason declination matters is that it turns the compass from a rough pointer into a precision instrument - and, eventually, into a clue about the planet itself. If you sail by a needle believing it points to true south, you will steer a little wrong, and over a long voyage a few degrees becomes a large error in position. To navigate accurately you must know the deviation and correct for it. Shen Kuo did not sail the oceans, and he did not explain why the needle leans east; he had no concept of a global magnetic field to invoke. But he did the thing that makes the future possible: he saw the discrepancy clearly, refused to round it away, and recorded it as a real feature of nature. Centuries later, when the deviation was found to differ from place to place and to drift over time, it became one of the great puzzles that drove the science of geomagnetism - and a practical necessity for every navigator on earth. It all begins with Shen’s refusal to say ‘due south’ when his eyes told him ‘slightly east.’
What lifts Shen’s compass note above a mere report is that he tested. He describes four ways to let a magnetized needle turn freely so it can find its direction: floating it on the surface of water; balancing it on the rim of a bowl; balancing it on a fingernail; and suspending it by a single strand of new silk fixed to the middle of the needle with a dab of wax, hung in a windless place. He does not merely list these; he weighs them. Floating on water, he notes, makes the needle unsteady, too easily disturbed; the bowl-rim and fingernail let it turn smoothly but it slides off too readily. The silk suspension, he concludes, is the best of the four - the needle hangs still and true, and you can watch it settle. This is the comparative, hands-on judgment of a working experimenter: not ‘here is how it is done,’ but ‘here are the options, here is how each behaves, and here is which one to trust.’ The compass enters history already accompanied by a fair test of its own design.
