From seashells stranded high in the Taihang mountains, Shen Kuo inferred ancient shorelines; from petrified bamboo in dry northern Yanzhou, vanished climates; from silt and erosion, the slow building of land. It is geomorphology and deep time, reached by pure reasoning from evidence.
Travelling in the Taihang mountains - a range that runs far inland, hundreds of li from the sea - Shen Kuo looked at a cliff face and noticed something that should not have been there. Running horizontally through the rock, like a great belt, lay a stratum packed with the shells of bivalve molluscs and rounded, egg-shaped stones. Shells. Sea creatures’ shells, layered into a mountain, far from any ocean, high above the plains. To most eyes this was a marvel or a meaningless oddity. To Shen it was evidence, and it demanded an inference. These were the shells of shore-dwelling animals; therefore this place, now a mountain deep inland, must once have been a seashore. The sea that deposited them had since withdrawn, and the land had risen or the waters retreated, over a span of time long enough to turn a beach into a mountain range. From a band of fossils in a cliff, Shen read a former coastline.
Shen did not stop at ‘the sea was once here.’ He asked how such changes come about, and reached for ordinary, still-visible processes. He observed that rivers carry mud and sediment, and that where they slow and meet the sea they drop their load; over time this deposited silt builds new land, extending the shore outward. Conversely, he saw that highlands are worn away - streams cut into mountains, carrying their substance downhill grain by grain. Put these together and you have a genuine theory of landscape: the great plains of eastern China are made of silt washed down from the highlands and laid down over ages, while the mountains are the slowly eroding source of that material. The Taihang shells fit this perfectly. The coast has marched eastward because the rivers have kept building land into the sea, mud upon mud, century after century.
What is remarkable is the mechanism. Shen explains the shape of the world not by catastrophe or divine act but by the patient accumulation of tiny, familiar effects - the same silt you can watch a muddy river carrying today, multiplied by an immensity of time. That is the essential logic of modern geology: great results from small causes, given enough ages to work.
The petrified bamboo of Yanzhou is Shen Kuo’s second great geological inference, and it complements the first. The Taihang shells told him the distribution of land and sea had changed; the Yanzhou bamboo told him the distribution of climate had changed too. He reasoned it out with care. The stems, found deep underground where a riverbank had collapsed, were plainly bamboo, complete with roots. Bamboo, he knew, is a plant of warm, wet, low-lying places; Yanzhou in his day was dry and cold, no place for it. The only way to reconcile the fossil with the environment was to conclude that the environment had not always been as it is - that in some very ancient time the region had been low, damp, and mild, fit for bamboo, and had since become the arid north he knew. He even speculated about the great antiquity this implied, groping toward the idea of an earth far older than the human record.
Set the two inferences side by side and you can see a single powerful mind at work: a fossil is a message from a former state of the world, and by asking what conditions the once-living thing required, you can reconstruct that vanished state. Shells mean a former sea; bamboo means a former climate. Both mean an earth with a deep and changing history.
