Movable Type: Honouring a Craftsman’s Invention

Four hundred years before Gutenberg, an obscure Chinese commoner named Bi Sheng invented movable type from baked clay. We know this for one reason only: Shen Kuo, a high official, thought a craftsman’s ingenuity worth recording. His notebook is the sole surviving account.

Between about 1041 and 1048, during the Qingli reign period, a Chinese artisan named Bi Sheng invented movable type - individual, reusable character-pieces that could be composed into a page, printed, then broken up and rearranged for the next page. It was one of the pivotal inventions in the history of information, some four centuries before Johannes Gutenberg did the analogous thing in Europe. And we know that Bi Sheng existed, and what he did, from a single source in all the world: the Dream Pool Essays of Shen Kuo. Bi Sheng was, in Shen’s own words, ‘a man of unofficial position’ - a commoner, without rank or title, the kind of person the official histories never mention. Had Shen not paused, decades later, to write down what this craftsman had devised, the inventor of movable type would have vanished from history entirely. The notebook that saved him is not a treatise on printing; it is a jotting, filed among Shen’s hundreds of others, that happens to be the founding document of movable-type printing.

Shen describes Bi Sheng’s method with the precision of a man who genuinely understood machinery. Bi Sheng took sticky clay and cut into it individual characters, each stroke standing up thin as the rim of a coin; each character was a separate small piece of type. These he hardened by baking in a fire, so they became durable ceramic. To print, he prepared an iron plate and spread on it a mixture of pine resin, wax, and paper ash. Around this he set an iron frame, and into the frame he packed the clay types, close together, until the frame was full and formed one solid block. Then he warmed the plate: the resin-and-wax bed softened, and he pressed the type flat with a smooth board so that every character stood at exactly the same level, even as a whetstone. When the bed cooled, the type set firm and could be inked and printed. To take it apart, he simply warmed the plate again, and the types came loose to be sorted and used once more. For efficiency he kept two iron plates in rotation - printing from one while composing the next - and stored the type in labelled cases arranged by rhyme, so any character could be found at once.

Shen’s account ends with a small, human detail that says a great deal. When Bi Sheng died, his set of movable types did not pass to some institution or workshop; it passed into the hands of Shen Kuo’s own nephews (or kinsmen), who kept it. Shen knew the invention, in other words, partly through a personal connection to the types themselves - which is perhaps why he alone thought to record it. That closing note turns an abstract technology into a story about particular people: an ingenious commoner, his hand-made ceramic characters, and the family that preserved them as a treasured curiosity.

The whole entry embodies something rare in Shen’s world: a high official taking a craftsman’s technical achievement seriously as knowledge. In a culture that sharply separated the scholar-gentleman from the manual artisan, and prized classical learning far above ‘mere’ technique, Shen’s attentive, admiring description of how a labourer in clay solved the problem of reusable type is quietly radical. He extends the dignity of the historical record - normally reserved for emperors, officials, and sages - to the ingenuity of a nameless workman. In doing so he not only saved a great invention from oblivion; he modeled a more generous idea of whose knowledge counts.
