Émilie du Châtelet’s translation of and commentary on Newton’s <em>Principia</em> - still the standard French version - and what it means to translate a physics, not merely a text: to re-derive its mathematics in a new language, and to finish it while racing against death.
When Émilie du Châtelet set out to translate Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica into French, she was not doing what we usually mean by translation. Newton’s masterpiece was written in Latin and, more forbiddingly, in the language of classical geometry: dense diagrams and proportions that even trained mathematicians struggled to follow. To carry that book into French, du Châtelet had to do two things at once. She had to render the Latin, and she had to re-derive the physics in the new mathematics of her century - the calculus and algebraic analysis that Newton himself had largely kept out of the finished Principia. To translate a physics is to rebuild it: every proof re-checked, every result re-expressed in a living scientific language. Working with the mathematician Alexis Clairaut, who checked her calculations chapter by chapter, she produced not a paraphrase but a scientific edition. Voltaire, her companion, wrote to Frederick the Great that she was a great mind whose only misfortune was to have been born a woman.
It is tempting to file du Châtelet as Voltaire’s brilliant companion, the woman who helped popularize Newton in France. She refused that framing fiercely. In a letter to Frederick the Great of Prussia, a man who condescended to her, she demanded to be judged as a person and a scientist, not as an accessory to the celebrated men around her. The Principia project is the proof of her claim. She chose the hardest possible task in the physical science of her age - to master, translate, and analytically re-derive the most difficult book in it - and she carried it through to the end. Her commentary was not a set of footnotes but a second book bound with the first: a history of the system of the world, and an analytical section that recast Newton’s mechanics in the calculus, applying it to the motion of the planets and comets.
The story of the Principia translation ends in a race against time that gives it the character of legend. In 1749, at forty-two, du Châtelet found she was pregnant - a dangerous condition at her age in that century - and she became convinced she would not survive the birth. Rather than set the work aside, she drove herself to finish it, working, by contemporary accounts, seventeen and eighteen hours a day to complete the translation and commentary before her time ran out. She wrote to friends of her fear that she would die with the book unfinished. On the night of the 3rd of September she gave birth to a daughter, having, Voltaire reported, felt the first pangs while at her desk over Newton. A week later, on the 10th of September 1749, she died of a pulmonary embolism. The manuscript was complete. Published a decade after her death, it became her monument.
