Hypatia’s hand in the greatest astronomical work of antiquity - Ptolemy’s <em>Almagest</em> and the Handy Tables - and what a ‘commentary’ or ‘critical edition’ truly meant: preserving, correcting, and making teachable the mathematics by which the ancient world read the heavens.
Around 150 CE, in the same Alexandria, Claudius Ptolemy completed a work he called the Mathematike Syntaxis, the ‘Mathematical Compilation.’ Later ages knew it by the name Arabic astronomers gave it: the Almagest, ‘the greatest.’ In thirteen books it set out a complete mathematical astronomy - a geometric model that could predict, with real accuracy, the motions of the sun, moon, and planets against the stars. To make the heavens calculable, Ptolemy combined circles upon circles: a planet rides a small circle, the epicycle, whose centre rides a large circle, the deferent, around an off-centre earth. It was a staggering feat of geometry and observation, and it became the single most important scientific book of the ancient and medieval world, ruling astronomy until Copernicus, fourteen centuries later. But a book that complex, copied by hand for a thousand years, needed constant care to survive - and that is where Hypatia enters.
It is hard, in the age of printing and digital copies, to feel how fragile an ancient text was. Every copy of the Almagest was written out by hand, and every hand introduced errors - a slipped letter, a miscopied number, a line skipped by a tired eye. In ordinary prose such errors are a nuisance; in astronomy they are fatal, because the Almagest is full of long numerical tables, and a single wrong digit in a table of planetary positions produces a wrong prediction of the sky. To ‘edit’ such a work was therefore a deeply mathematical act: you had to re-do the calculations to catch the corruptions, restore the true values, and often rewrite the methods more clearly so that a student could reproduce them. This is the labour Hypatia and Theon performed on Ptolemy. They were not passive scribes; they were the quality control on which the accuracy of the whole science depended.
For both Ptolemy and the Neoplatonists Hypatia taught, astronomy was the highest of the mathematical sciences - the point where geometry and arithmetic reached up to read the order of the cosmos itself. Ptolemy opens the Almagest with a striking claim about the three kinds of theoretical knowledge. Theology studies the divine first cause, but it is remote and conjectural; physics studies changing material things, but they are unstable and its conclusions are unsure. Only mathematics, he argues, yields certain knowledge, because its demonstrations proceed by unquestionable methods of geometry and arithmetic. And astronomy is mathematics turned upon the most beautiful and orderly object there is, the heavens. To study the stars mathematically was, for Ptolemy, to make the soul itself more ordered and divine - a thought that fit Hypatia’s Neoplatonism exactly.
